We are what we do

About us

We are an independent, grassroots social organization that represents various territories in impoverished neighborhoods in Latin America.

We began with a ball in a courtyard, in Villa Zavaleta in the city of Buenos Aires, in 2004. In 2011 we raised our voice, starting the edition of “La Garganta Poderosa”, which was initially a printed magazine and is now also an array of popular communication channels (including social networks, radio & podcast, printed and audiovisual production, books and films).

We use the participatory methodology (inspired by Paulo Freire) as a tool for transformation and integration.

Actions areas

  • Gender and Sexual Diversity
  • Economy - Labor
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Education
  • Sports
  • Culture
  • Communication
  • Human Rights and State Repression - Drug Trafficking

As people who live in the popular neighborhoods, we understand that we are the architects of our destiny as it relates both to the demands to the States and to the self-managed organization of projects that improve our quality of life.

What we do

In each neighborhood we organize activities that respond to the needs of that community.

  • We support 150 soup kitchens. These are dining halls / soup kitchens and picnic areas where more than 40,000 meals are delivered free of charge.
  • We have 75 cooperatives at the moment, whose focuses include, gastronomic, service, textile, construction, etc. Eighty-three percent of the members are women and/or sexual diversities.
  • We organize a community health room in the neighborhood.
  • We have already inaugurated 8 Women's and Queer Houses (sexual diversities / LGTBIQ+).
  • We maintain active soccer, music, recreation and tutoring workshops.
  • Four cohorts have already graduated from our Bachillerato Popular 'Ernesto Che Guevara' in Villa 31 of Barrio Retiro, Buenos Aires, for adults who had not finished high school.
  • We built a community sports center.
  • We edited more than 100 issues of La Garganta Poderosa magazine.
In addition, over the years, we have organized summer camps, sports championships, festivals, artistic and cultural events interventions, forums and have participated in round tables, conferences and national and international meetings.

We coordinate many activities with UNICEF, with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child based in Geneva and with various other organizations that share our goals.
